Shanghai port container volume hits a new monthly high

The world’s busiest container port, Shanghai, sets a new monthly container handling record in August.
For the month of August Shanghai port posted a container volume of 5.02 million teu.
The record volume last month was attributed by the traditional export peak season during July and September and the container volume growth between China and US, the port remained a continued box throughput growth.
Gemini Cooperation, a collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd launched earlier this year, also lifted the container transhipment volume at the port of Shanghai.
From January to August this year, container throughput at Shanghai port reached 36.7 million teu, a year-on-year increase of 5.3%. Yangshan port handled 2.57 million teu in August, accounting for 51.2% of Shanghai port's total throughput.
