Transnet Expands Fleet with Liebherr RTGs

South Africa’s Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT), operated by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), has received nine advanced Liebherr diesel-electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs).

The new fleet aims to:

  • Improve container yard productivity
  • Reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional cranes
  • Enhance reliability in peak operational periods

Boosting Port Efficiency

The introduction of these RTGs is part of Transnet’s modernization strategy to improve cargo throughput across South African ports. According to TPT, the addition will enable faster container moves per hour, reducing vessel waiting times and strengthening Cape Town’s role as a key logistics hub.

Sustainability and Green Operations

Unlike older diesel-only cranes, the new diesel-electric models are designed to lower fuel consumption and carbon footprint, aligning with South Africa’s sustainability goals. This investment reflects a growing global trend in the shipping industry toward greener port operations.

What This Means for Global Trade

The deployment of modern RTGs ensures:

  • Shorter turnaround times for shipping lines
  • Better service reliability for importers and exporters
  • Competitive positioning of Cape Town in the global trade network
