NorthPort Expands Capacity with New Mobile Harbour Cranes

Publish Date:
NorthPort in the Philippines has taken delivery of two new 41-tonne mobile harbour cranes from Konecranes (Gottwald ESP 5 model) to modernise cargo handling, support growing trade volumes and strengthen its terminal operations at Pier 10.

Background & Purpose
NorthPort, operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), has embarked on a modernisation programme for its terminals to keep up with rising domestic cargo trade and to enhance service reliability for shipping lines and logistic partners.

New Equipment & Features
The new equipment consists of two Konecranes Gottwald ESP 5 mobile harbour cranes, each offering a 41-tonne lifting capacity and a 46-metre outreach.
These cranes arrive at Pier 10 and will support Terminal 2 operations, working alongside the existing eight quay cranes of Terminal 1, enabling NorthPort to handle more vessels at once.

Timeline & Implementation
The cranes arrived on 19 November and are undergoing final testing and commissioning before full commercial operations begin in December.
Additionally, NorthPort has already placed orders for four new hybrid Mitsui RTGs scheduled for delivery in Q4 2026.

Strategic Impact
By upgrading its cargo-handling equipment, NorthPort is positioning itself for increased throughput capacity, improved terminal productivity, quicker vessel turnaround and better service levels. The investment also underscores the terminal’s commitment to future readiness and responding to growing trade demands in the Philippines.
