LKAB commissions new shiploader in Narvik

Publish Date:
Swedish mining company LKAB has inaugurated a new, modern shiploader at the Port of Narvik in northern Norway, replacing the previous unit commissioned in 1977. The new loader complies with CE standards for environmental performance and workplace safety, and forms part of a broader upgrade of LKAB’s logistics infrastructure.

Background & Purpose

  • The original shiploader (U5) at Narvik was put into service in 1977. Over nearly five decades of operation, it reached the end of its technical lifespan.
  • Given the strategic importance of Narvik’s port an ice-free, deepwater facility used to export iron ore products LKAB decided to replace the aging loader with a modern facility to ensure long-term, efficient, and sustainable operations.

Launch of the New Shiploader

  • On 27 November 2025, LKAB officially inaugurated the new shiploader at the Port of Narvik.
  • The replacement is not just about renewing old equipment, but about upgrading to modern standards — the new loader is enclosed and equipped with state-of-the-art safety and environmental features.

Technical and Strategic Improvements

  • The new loader is built to meet current CE regulations for both environmental impact and workplace safety.
  • Maintenance and servicing have been optimized: the loader is designed for efficient maintenance with minimal downtime.
  • This shiploader is part of a much larger investment program by LKAB — totalling several billion SEK — which includes improvements such as automated silo systems, new quay-side loaders, conveyor belts, unloading stations, and new storage facilities. These upgrades aim to streamline the entire logistics chain from mine to ship.

Importance for Logistics and Export

  • For LKAB, logistics efficiency is a competitive advantage. The upgrade enhances the company’s ability to deliver iron-ore products quickly, safely, and sustainably to global markets.
  • The port of Narvik is central to LKAB’s export network. Its ice-free, deep-water conditions allow year-round shipments, and the new loader reinforces the long-term viability of the port as a critical export hub.
