ICTSI to Lift Rio Brasil Terminal Capacity by More Than 70%

International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) is investing US$175 million to expand and modernize its Rio Brasil Terminal at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, increasing annual throughput capacity to 750,000 TEU and improving infrastructure and equipment.

Introduction

Global terminal operator ICTSI has announced a major investment initiative to significantly increase the capacity of the Rio Brasil Terminal in Brazil’s Port of Rio de Janeiro. The project aims to strengthen the port’s logistics role in South America.

Investment Overview

ICTSI plans to invest US$175 million in infrastructure improvements and new handling equipment at the terminal. This investment will raise the terminal’s throughput capacity to 750,000 TEU per year, representing an increase of more than 70% compared to current levels. 

Infrastructure Upgrades

The planned upgrades will include modernization of facilities and installation of advanced container handling equipment. The first new cranes are expected to arrive in 2026, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting larger vessel operations. 

Strategic Significance

The expansion underscores ICTSI’s commitment to reinforcing Brazil’s competitiveness in global maritime trade. By boosting Rio Brasil Terminal’s capacity, ICTSI strengthens the Port of Rio de Janeiro’s position as a key logistics hub in the Southeast region of Brazil.
