Dutch authorities launch study on potential Maasvlakte expansion

Publish Date:
Dutch authorities have initiated a formal study to assess whether the Port of Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte area should be further expanded seaward; results are expected by the end of next year, at which point a decision will be made.

Background
Dutch government and port authorities are exploring additional expansion options for Maasvlakte — a major deep‑water extension of the Port of Rotterdam that accommodates global container and cargo traffic. The port has limited space for future growth and competition from other European ports continues to rise.

Purpose of the Study
The study aims to evaluate the feasibility, environmental impacts, economic benefits, and technical challenges of extending Maasvlakte further into the North Sea. This could involve new land reclamation or deep‑water terminal construction.

Timeline and Next Steps
• The investigation is underway in early 2026.
• Findings and recommendations are expected by end of next year (2027).
• After the report, authorities will decide whether to proceed with the expansion project.

Strategic Context
• The Port of Rotterdam has previously explored Maasvlakte 3 as a concept for further seaward growth due to capacity constraints.
• Ongoing infrastructure, energy, and logistics projects around Maasvlakte reflect the port’s role as a leading European hub.
