Three Group Solutions has finalized the rollout of a comprehensive private 5G network across Hutchison Ports’ United Kingdom terminals, strengthening connectivity infrastructure at critical maritime logistics hubs. The network covers the Port of Felixstowe, Harwich International Port and London Thamesport, creating a unified wireless platform that supports digital innovation and operational excellence.

Network Capabilities

The private 5G deployment delivers ultra-reliable, high-capacity and low-latency connectivity tailor-made for industrial use cases. By operating exclusively within Hutchison Ports’ cybersecurity perimeter, it ensures mission-critical reliability required for large-scale automation.

Seamless Transition from 4G

To avoid disruption in live port operations, the new 5G network was constructed alongside the existing 4G infrastructure. Different spectrum blocks were used so both networks could run in parallel, allowing hardware and vehicles to migrate gradually and safely to 5G.

Support for Automation

A primary focus of the network upgrade is to enable autonomous electric trucks and remote-controlled cranes. These require consistent, low-latency communication to operate reliably. The enhanced wireless infrastructure also opens the door for future technologies such as predictive maintenance sensors, drones for inspection, environmental monitoring and digital twin data integration.
